Abstract:
During 2004-2006, the resistance of apple hybrids to green apple aphid, Aphis pomi de Geer, and rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea Pass. was assessed.
Based on preliminary screening completed in 1998-2003, 19 hybrid combinations with a high resistance to scab and low susceptibility to powdery mildew and aphid infestations were selected for further evaluation. ‘Golden Delicious’ was used as a susceptible reference cultivar.
Artificial infestation was carried out in two trials – in an unsprayed breeding orchard and on hybrid seedlings budded on M 26 rootstock, grown in pots.
Some hybrids of 'Mollie's Delicious' × 'Florina', 'Mollie's Delicious' × 'Prima', 'Gloster' × 'Prima' and some seedlings of 'Florina' open pollinated (o.p.) and 'Liberty' o.p. manifested resistance to D. plantaginea. Other hybrids of 'Starkrimson' × 'Prima', 'Mollie's Delicious' × 'Florina', 'Mollie’s Delicious' × 'Prima', 'Winter Rambour' × 'Priscilla' as well as some hybrids of 'Florina' o.p. and 'Liberty' o.p. showed resistance to A. pomi. Combined resistance to both aphids has been found in the hybrids 'Mollie's Delicious' × 'Florina', 'Mollie's Delicious' × 'Prima' and in two hybrids of 'Liberty' o.p.
It was confirmed that 'Florina' and 'Prima' are good donors of resistance to the aphids under study.
