SOME RESULTS OF THE APPLE BREEDING PROGRAMME IN BULGARIA

Abstract:
The first apple breeding programme for resistance to scab and powdery mildew and with a range of tree habits was started in 1986. To incorporate resistance to scab, parents such as 'Prima', 'Liberty', 'Jonafree', 'Nova Easygrow', 'Coop 30', 'Williams Pride' and others carrying the Vf resistance and Vf + poly genes were included. The Bulgarian hybrid '142' ('Golden delicious' × M. zumi) with resistance to scab and mildew is very effective as a donor for powdery mildew resistance. Hybrids with a compact growth habit were selected from the crosses of 'McIntosh Wijick' and 'Telamon' with scab resistant cultivars. The progenies of 'Elise Rathke' and 'Paradox' showed that hybrids with a significantly varying weeping habit, including the T-type (similar to the “Solen” French training system), some seedlings from 'Mollie's Delicious', 'Coop 30' and others showed good slender spindle habit of the trees. High percentages with resistance to scab and powdery mildew were found in progenies of 'Starkrimson' × '142', 'Fuji' × 'Nova Easygrow', 'Florina' × 'Freedom' and 'Fuji' × 'Freedom'.
