Abstract:
With the aim of developing an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) as a biocontrol product effective against European cockchafer larvae, an EPN strain collection was established at the Research Station of Újfehértó. The main goals of this project were to isolate bacterial symbionts (EPB) from strains of the EPN collection, screen them for antimicrobial compound-producing capability and select strains suitable for developing biocontrol products against Erwinia amylovora. From 305 nematode samples, 257 EPB strains were isolated and 69 strains were selected as producing antibiotics effective against Bacillus subtilis. To date, 5 strains have proven to be highly effective against E. amylovora in laboratory tests.
