Abstract:
Advances in information and communications technology (ICT) and knowledge management (KM) open up new opportunities for open and distance learning.
Increasingly, learners in developing countries have access to the Internet and World Wide Web, and this allows those working in training and education to address ever increasing demands for learning by offering activities "on-line" using learning management systems (LMS) and learning objects (LO). Training staff of a number of research centers of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), in collaboration with the ARIADNE Foundation for the European Knowledge Pool, have adapted some of these tools allowing the development of distance learning events on agriculture, including horticulture, and natural resources management and to expand their learning audiences and better prepare learners for face-to-face learning events.
These measures are designed to enhance the availability and accessibility of educational digital content produced by the CGIAR as global public goods in an open learning repository and in Web-based courses for learners in developing countries for formal and non-formal technical and vocational education and training programs, as well as for self-directed learning.
