GREENHOUSE-CROP SYSTEM CONTROL FOR A SUSTAINABLE PLANT PRODUCTION

Author:   T. Boulard
Keywords:   greenhouse, sustainability
Abstract:
Control processes involved in greenhouse production concern several aspects of the production and must be considered globally and in mutual interaction. An analysis of the greenhouse production as forming a multilevel hierarchized system is presented. Using this grid of analysis, the recent developments in the field of greenhouse control processes are examined with respect to the information, criteria and control strategies that are taken into account in the three levels of the decision process: a) physical and chemical (climate, substrate) information and criteria related to the greenhouse environment; b) physiological and biological ones, related to crop behaviour and other biotic (bio aggressors and defenders) agents which were seldom considered in the control strategies; and, c) environmental, economical and social ones, related to sustainable crop production. Our focus was on control of the recycling of the nutrient solution, integrated pest management (IPM), temperature and more generally climate integration by plants. We concentrated on global approaches dealing with different levels of the decision process and allowing for example for the simultaneous setting and control of several parameters concerning the climate and/or the fertigation and/or the sanitary state of the plants. Finally, we analysed how the recent progress in control methodologies can answer to the new constraints involved by the sustainable development criteria and we outlined new prospects.
