EFFECT OF ROOTSTOCKS ON THE TOLERANCE TO HIGH TEMPERATURE OF EGGPLANTS UNDER SOLAR GREENHOUSE DURING SUMMER SEASON

Authors:   S. Wang, R. Yang, J. Cheng, J. Zhao
Keywords:   eggplant (Solanum melongena), grafting, high temperature
Abstract:
The temperature in the solar greenhouse is very high during summer season, which is not suitable for the growth of eggplant in north China. So three rootstocks were tested in this experiment to verify whether graft can improve the tolerance to high temperature of eggplant grown in solar greenhouse during summer season or not. The three rootstocks were Chiqie, Nianmaoqie, and Tuolubamu. 70 days later after grafting, the fruits ripen, the temperature in the solar greenhouse was more than 40°C and lasted for 15 days, the effects of high temperature on the growth of eggplant was evaluated. The results were as followed: for the grafted eggplant, the leaf free proline and protein content were higher than that of the self-rooted eggplant, at the same time the POD activity was also higher than that of the self-rooted ones, whereas the SOD activity and APX activity of grated eggplant decreased compared with the self-rooted ones, graft decreased the sensitivity of eggplant to the high temperature. Rootstocks could prolong the growth stage of eggplant, meanwhile, the best rootstock was Nianmaoqie.
