Abstract:
The objective of this study was to examine a soilless greenhouse system for the ability to produce a high quality strawberry potted planting material.
Mother plants (‘Elsanta’) were planted in two densities: 3 or 6 plants per bag (12 or 24 plants per m2, respectively). Part of the plantlets, right after cutting from the mother plants, were rooted in plug trays.
The other plantlets were rooted in small pots (being still connected to the mother plants). The productivity of mother plants and ways of rooting were estimated along with the following parameters: weight of obtained plantlets, weight and length of roots and crown diameter.
The planting density of mother plants significantly influenced the number of runner plants.
One mother plant (grown at the density of 12 plants/m2) produced 18.7 runner plants whereas the plants grown at double density produced 10.6 runner plants.
However, the higher density mother plants produced 13.8% more runner plants per growing unit area.
The plantlets rooted while still being connected to the mother plants had bigger weight, longer roots and their crown diameter was bigger in comparison with the plantlets rooted after cutting off.
Rooting the tips before their cutting from the mother plants significantly influenced the quality of the obtained planting material.
The evaluation of the material measured by the diameter of the crown showed that in November even the plantlets rooted in the end of August developed crowns with diameter bigger than 12 mm.
