Abstract:
The natural habitat condition and plant characteristics of S. strigillosa were investigated. The soil moisture in S. strigillosa habitats was about 3 to 5%, which was very dry. Soil salinity and pH were about 18.7 mg/L-1 and 5.9. S. strigillosa population were found 10 to 15 m away from the water line in mostly sand hills that were exposed to full sun light. Also, Calystegia soldanella, Vitex rotundifolia and Lathyrus japonica were growing near S. strigillosa in the habitat. S. strigillosa has many short and soft hairs on the shoot and the thick rhizomes were well developed. Plants were 30 to 40 cm tall with 15 to 30 branches. Flowers were paired showed opposite phyllotaxis in leaf axillary and average flower size was about 2.0 to 2.5 cm. Flower clusters were 40 to 50 per plant and blooming period for each flower was about 25 to 35 days and flowering time was from middle May until late October. In conclusion, S. strigillosa should be considered as a good candidate for ornamental street plants in dry conditions.
