Abstract:
In Romania, walnut Juglans regia L. is an important fruit crop, although most of the fruit production comes from non-grafted walnut trees, which are natural hybrids.
Breeding programs have been launched during last 30 years to develop new cultivars with uniform fruit quality.
In addition, foreign cultivars have been introduced and tested to establish a valuable walnut genepool.
Statiunea de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Pomicultura (SCDP) Valcea, started a walnut breeding program.
Three cultivars were selected from local populations of the Valcea area and were named ‘Valcor’, ‘Valmit’ and ‘Valrex’. Later on, crossing of Romanian cultivars and selections with foreign ones produced more then 2500 intra and interspecific hybrids, which are under evaluation.
The 3 cultivars released by SCDP Valcea were introduced in a trial together with cultivars and selections of various origins (‘Franquette’, ‘Lara’, ‘Ferjean’, ‘Fernor’, ‘Fernette’, ‘Pedro’, ‘Serr’, ‘Vina’, ‘Chase D9’, ‘Sibisel 44’, ‘Sarmis’, ‘Jupânesti’, VL 54 B, VL 44 B, etc.). The objectives of this paper were to determine the behavior of various cultivars under Romanian conditions.
Production of fruits, precocity in bearing, resistance or tolerance to diseases, and fruit quality were determined in this trial.
The lateral-bearing cultivars proved to be more productive and precocious in the first years than were the others.
The lateral-bearing types, however, were more susceptible to diseases.
