Authors:   G. Achim, M. Botu, I. Botu
Keywords:   Juglans regia, walnut, rootstock
Abstract:
Walnut is a fruit crop of economical value for Romania and requires the improvement of orchard technologies and utilizing of performing cultivars and rootstocks for intensive culture. At the Statiunea de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Pomicultura (SCDP) Vâlcea, as result of selection work carried out on natural hybrids from indigenous populations, a new seedling walnut rootstock was named: ‘Portval’ (syn. ‘VL 26 B’). This rootstock is vigorous, has a spread habit, flowering is protandrous with lots of pollen, productive and with good resistant to ecological factors and diseases. The growth in the nursery is good; the emerging rate of seeds exceeds 80%; the yield of good quality seedlings is 62963 pcs./ha. The success rate of budding in the field is more than 80% and at the end of the vegetative period of the next year after budding, the scion has 23.8 mm in diameter and over 160.0 cm height. In addition, in the test orchard, this rootstock demonstrated good compatibility with grafted cultivars and induced a good productivity.
