Abstract:
A peach (Prunus persica L.) breeding program has been active in Romania for 20 years.
It was established at the Breeding Laboratory of the Fruit Research Station, in Constanta.
The goals of the program were to obtain cultivars with superior quality of fruit, high productivity, and resistance to diseases, pest and freezing injury.
Many peaches, including clingstone, nectarine and brugnone types were studied.
From these, 350 parents were selected.
Many hybrids have been obtained from these crosses.
Since 1992, seven competition crops were initiated in Constanta, Bucuresti and others regions of Romania.
The following peach cultivars were released: Raluca, Cecilia, Filip, and Florin; nectarines: Costin and Melania; clingstone: Catherine Se. 1; brugnone: Valerica.
Each of these new cultivars have been commercially released and are available to Romanian fruit growers.
