Abstract:
The Fruit Research Station Constanta, Romania, has been investigating the selection of peach hybrids (Prunus hybrid) rootstocks.
Fifteen hybrids were chosen as mother trees and their response in the nursery was evaluated.
The fifteen selected hybrids were chosen from twelve interspecific hybrids and three self pollinations of T16, a Romanian peach tree rootstock.
The observations were performed according to traditional methodology for selection and breeding of new rootstocks.
After reviewing many thousands of hybrids from the selection and nursery fields, six hybrids were selected.
T16 × Bailey R7P76, was selected for stones/kg, dwarfing, high germination, good yields of standard seedlings and grafted trees/ha; T16 × Siberian C R1P116, for large number of stones/kg, good yield of stones/tree, dwarfing, high germination, good yield of standard seedlings and grafted trees/ha; T16 × Hui Hun Tao R1P42 for high vigor, good germination, high yield of standard seedlings and grafted trees/ha; Bailey × Siberian C R7P98 for high vigor, good yields of stones/tree, standard seedlings and grafted trees/ha, Bailey × Hui Hun Tao R8P24 for dwarfing, high germination, higher yield than the standard seedlings and grafted trees/ha; T16 × T16 - R2P69 for the large number of stones/kg, dwarfing, good germination and higher yield than standard seedlings.
