Abstract:
Twelve simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs were used for characterization of 286 apple, Malus × domestica Borkh., cultivars from the Bodensee region preserved in the Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau-Bodensee (KOB) orchard.
Multiplex polymerase chain reaction PCR was used and consisted of four PCR reactions of three primer pairs.
SSR fingerprinting successfully separated the 286 heritage apple cultivars.
Several misidentified cultivars were detected and included: ‘Beutelsbacher’ (‘Fameuse’) and ‘Fuerst Bismark’ (‘Georg Cave’). Cultivars with multiple names were also identified: ‘Gelber Koestlicher’ is a synonym of ‘Golden Delicious’. Future extension of the genebank with the additional heritage cultivars will create a resource for breeding, nursery gardens, and quality control.
