ISHS Acta Horticulturae 76: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

ENERGY SAVING TRENCH-HOUSES

Authors:   Y. Mihara, M. Hayashi
Abstract:
Two type trench-houses were designed and built for saving energy of heating in greenhouses in middle latitudes. They resemble the Venlo type house in size, but every span is separated each other by a thick soil wall (underground type) or a water-tubes piled wall (ground type) which acts similar to the floor in heat budget. Under the roof double curtains are equiped to reduce night heat loss.

Measured temperatures inside the underground type trench-house without heating agreed well with values estimated from a diagram made theoretically. For example, at the conditions that floor-roof ratio is 2.0 and heat transmission coefficient for double curtained roof is 1.5 kcal m-2h-1°C-1, inside temperature kept about 10°C when outdoor temperature falls below 0°C.
