ISHS Acta Horticulturae 76: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

EVALUATION OF DOUBLE-CLAD POLYTHENE GREENHOUSES FOR ENERGY SAVING IN EARLY TOMATO PRODUCTION

Authors:   T. O'Flaherty, M.J. Maher
Abstract:
A comparison was made of the amount of fuel used in heating two similar polythene tunnel houses, one double-clad and one single-clad, during the period 28 February to 27 June, 1977, while tomato crops were being grown in both houses. The double-clad house used 33% less fuel than the single-clad house. Crop yields were similar in the two houses, but lower than expected due to high humidity and other factors. A multi-span double-clad house has been built to provide better conditions for crop production.
