ISHS Acta Horticulturae 76: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

A YEAR ROUND PERFORMANCE STUDIES ON THE NEW PROCESS OF "SOLAR GREENHOUSE". PHYSICAL AND AGRONOMICAL RESULTS

Author:   J.P. Chiapale
Abstract:
The impact of rising fuel costs is more and more important on the greenhouse industry ; so this process has been developped since three years in France at I.N.R.A. of Avignon, with the collaboration of C.E.A. The essence of this solar greenhouse is a double translucent roof structure with a circulation of water and CuCl2 used as heat carrier. This solution is transparent to visible wavelengths and has a strong absorption coefficient in near infrared range. During day, the process gives a good condition for plant's growth and reduces evaporation and ventilation needs. During night, the excess heat stored during the day could be used for heating. The new solar greenhouse system substitutes solar energy for part of fuel needs.

This paper reports the results of a set of experiments conducted during the period March 1976-June 1977 to establish the performance of this solar heating and cooling system for a greenhouse, and the agronomical results : effects on the cropping of tomato plants.
