ISHS Acta Horticulturae 76: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

SOLAR SPACE HEATING OF A HOUSE AND ATTACHED GREENHOUSE

Authors:   C.C. Smith, S. Bedford
Abstract:
A solar heated residence/greenhouse combination structure has been developed and operated at the Solar Energy Applications Laboratory of Colorado State University. The greenhouse is situated on the south side of the structure with a solid wall separating it from the residence area. Each area comprises 59.5 square meters with 42 square meters of growing area in raised benches.

Solar heat is collected by forced air through the greenhouse and 47 square meters of flat-plate solar collectors; it is stored as sensible heat in a rock bed for nighttime or cloudy day use. The solar system began operation on 10 December 1976, and has operated without interruption since that date. Performance data have been obtained and are reported. Operational and construction characteristics of this project are also documented.
