Abstract:
Soilless culture developed very rapidly in the last 20 years in mainland China. From 1985–1995 soilless culture was a key project of Ministry of Agriculture. Area of soilless culture was only 0.1 ha in 1981 but by 1995 there were 50 ha of different types of soilless culture systems. Most areas are for vegetable production, and a little for flower production. Since 1996, soilless culture has become a national key project. By 2000, there were 815 ha of soilless culture, and by 2005 the area of soilless culture reached 1250 ha, an increase of more than 20-fold in 10 years. The main systems are eco-organic type soilless culture system, floating capillary hydroponics, nutrient film technique (NFT), drop flow hydroponics (DFH), and Lu-SC system. The main research activities concern attempts to reduce to maintain a good production environment. The eco-organic type soilless culture systems can produce organic food. The report introduced the brief history of soilless culture, main soilless culture systems, main progress in research and extension work, and a discussion of the future of soilless culture in mainland China as well.
