Abstract:
In central Tunisia (Gammouda, Sidi Bouzid), four processing tomato varieties Riogrande, Hypeel 108, Badra and Chibli F1 were open field cultivated. Two types of nursery plants developed on soil (control plants) or on peat (treated plants) were compared for each variety; cultivation lasted from 15 March to 18 July. Number of clusters/plant, flowers/cluster, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight and fruit yield/ha were registered. First ripe fruits were harvested at the end of May for treated plant and in the second week of June for control plants. Total yield varied from 52.5 t/ha (Badra) to 95.5 t/ha (Chibli F1) for control plants and from 59.9 (Badra) to 114 t/ha (Chibli F1) for treated plants. Such increases, from 15 (variety Badra) to 20% (variety Chibli F1), was a consequence of the improvement of flower number (+9%), cluster number (+4%) and fruit number (+18%). However, no important differences were noticed for fruit weight neither between types of plants nor between studied varieties.
