INFLUENCE OF THE FORM OF NITROGEN SUPPLY ON NITROGEN UPTAKE AND ANATOMY STRUCTURES

Abstract:
We tested the influence of two N-sources, NO3- and NO2-, on root uptake and translocation of NO3-, NO2- and K+ ions in the xylem exudates of different tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum var. ‘Ibiza F1’) organs. Plants were hydroponically cultivated for 10 days on a nutrient solution enriched with KNO2 or KNO3 (controls) at 0, 25 and 10 mM. Plant sensitivity was proportional to KNO2 doses. The experimental system allowed direct measurements of net NO3- and NO2- uptake. The presence of K+ resulted in higher NO3- uptake and stimulated its translocation out of roots. These results suggest that effects of exposure to nitrite pollutant was injuring cell structure, delaying growth, root responses and overall nutrient demand were affected.
