ISHS Acta Horticulturae 758: X International Symposium on the Processing Tomato

CUMULATING USEFUL TRAITS IN PROCESSING TOMATO

Authors:   B. Atanassova, P. Stoeva-Popova, E. Balacheva
Keywords:   fruit quality, tolerance to abiotic stresses, tomato
Abstract:
The goal of the breeders is to develop processing tomato cultivars that exceed in one or in a number of traits the standard cultivars or the cultivars previously released and used in practice. At the same time consumers and growers demand and handling requirements have dramatically changed during the past two decades. Hence, the new cultivars developed have to be superior to the previously released ones not only in terms of traits that the latter already possess. They have to permanently cumulate new valuable agronomic traits in order to satisfy the demand of consumers for high nutritive quality and food safety and of growers and processors - for economic profitability. To meet these requirements breeding research concerning processing tomatoes focus on yield, tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and fruit quality. The possibilities of using the phenomenon of heterosis and of combining conventional and molecular breeding techniques in developing new varieties for processing are presented and discussed as a way of achieving the ambitious, complex and perhaps even changing in the future breeding goals concerning processing tomato.
