Abstract:
Six breadfruit cultivars from the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) breadfruit collection in Maui, Hawaii, were introduced to New Caledonia in 1999, at the IAC Vegetable Research Station of Saint-Louis in Mont-Dore. Trees were field-planted in 2000 and after five years 50% had died due to poor soil conditions and soil-borne diseases. During 2005-2007 the surviving trees of five introduced and one local cultivar were observed and described for tree, fruit and leaf characters. Data were collected on tree height, canopy and stem dimensions, leaf characters and fruit weight, dimensions, and yields.
