FOLK MEDICINAL PLANTS USED BY FOREST ETHNICS FOR TREATMENT OF LIVER DISORDERS IN INDIA |

| Abstract:
The present report deals with the first-hand information on 14 selected folk drugs recipes employed by the tribals and rural populations of certain north Indian states, for the prophylactic and treatment of liver disorders. The information reported is collected by the course of ethnobotanical explorations of forests in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during 1970–97 through interviewing ‘herbal medicine men’ known as ‘Shariya’, ‘Bhopas’, ‘Vaid’, ‘Guru’, etc. of the different regions. Folk names of drug plants, their taxonomic determination, part of the plants used, preparation of drug or its recipe where used as a compound drug, mode of application, and the precautions to be observed during the course of treatment for the cure of patients suffering from liver disorders are given. The data were compared with important ancient and recently published reports. Most of the uses reported here are contemporary and do not seem to have been reported earlier. It would be worthwhile to subject all these folk drugs to scientific testing in the context of claims reported herein. It is likely that through such investigations new promising drugs of plant origin may be discovered to combat such disease conditions. | |
