Abstract:
The phytochemical investigation of medicinal plants used in the indigenous system of medicine in India has been on since long, but the phytochemical analysis of these plants on modern scientific lines was taken into consideration only about a few decades ago.
In ancient literature, the plant Digitalis lanata is reported to possess curative properties and used for certain conditions of heart mainly as cardiac stimulant and tonic.
Fascinated by the very significant medicinal value of this plant, by using various chemical degradation reactions, chromatography and spectroscopic techniques, a cardenolide was isolated from the roots of Digitalis lanata.
