MODIFICATION OF PRODUCTIVE AND QUALITATIVE BEHAVIOR OF TEMPRANILLO VARIETY GROWN WITH DEFICITARY IRRIGATION THROUGH THE USE OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF BUDS ON THE WINTER PRUNING |

| Abstract:
The effects of the kind of buds used for pruning on vegetative development, yield and quality of the ‘Tempranillo’ grapes have been evaluated along the years 2002, 2003 and 2004. The trial was located at the Duero river valley, in Valladolid (Spain), and was carried out under deficit irrigation conditions. The experimental treatments applied consisted of four types of short pruning established on Royat cordon, based on the following units: two regular buds (BR and BB treatments), one regular bud and one basal bud shoot (NB treatment) and two basal bud shoots (NN treatment). Yield components were affected by the kind of pruning, so that the use of shorter elements in winter pruning has provoked around 31% yield decrease on treatments totally or partially based on basal buds with respect to those including regular buds, without any remarkable modification of the vegetative development. The application of shorter pruning has provoked a possible improvement of must quality through the increase of the probable alcoholic degree which has been correlated to its lower yield. Thus, the best pruning alternative to the traditional pruning system based on regular buds, in order to reach an adequate yield, a 24% lower than the regular treatment, maintaining the quality of the grapes, would be the NB treatment. To sum up, a considerable reduction in yield could be obtained with the appropriate management of winter pruning instead of waiting until the “vines are old”. | |
