RESPONSE OF NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZATION WITH OR WITHOUT CUTTING MANAGEMENT ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF BASELLA SP.

Authors:   Umesh Thapa, T.K. Maity
Abstract:
A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive years (2004–05) during summer season to study the response of three levels of nitrogen (50, 100 and 150 kg/ha) and two levels of phosphorus (40 and 60 kg/ha) with and without cutting treatments on growth, yield and quality of Basella sp. at Horticultural Research Station, Monduri, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, West Bengal, India. The yield and yield attributing characters declined with decreasing levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Cutting management was found beneficial for improving yield, number of branches, number of leaves, dry weight of leaves and stem whereas reverse effect of cutting was observed with some parameters like length of leaves, breadth of leaves and vine length. Ascorbic acid and other quality parameters were found in decreasing tendency with increasing nitrogen fertilization with cutting treatment. The effect of phosphorus on ascorbic acid and other quality were just reverse as that of nitrogen. All quality attributes contents were increased with increasing levels of phosphorus application. The highest yield (14.87 t/ha) was obtained with cutting treatments.
