| Abstract:
In the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India, rice-wheat is a predominant cropping system. The system is more or less risk free and provides stable productivity besides good income to the farmers. Additionally, this system helps greatly in industrial development, employment generation and sustaining economy. However, it is causing serious problems like steep fall in water table, more infestation by diseases and insect pests, depletion of soil fertility and pollution etc. With the development of short-duration (60 days), MYMV tolerant and synchronous maturing variety SML 668 it has become possible to grow summer mungbean as a catch crop in rice-wheat system. No-tillage (direct seeding) practice not only produced yield equivalent to tillage but saves money, energy and time required for field preparation. This new variety can be successfully grown after potato from 20th to 30th March and after the harvest of wheat upto 20th April using 37.5 kg/ha seed rate. Numerous experiments recorded about 2.0 t/ha yield after potato and 1.5 t/ha after wheat. Under this project ‘Seed Village Programme’ proved very successful for seed multiplication. Sowing of summer mungbean besides providing Rs.10,200 to 15,034/ha net returns over variable costs also added 37 kg N/ha by which 25% saving of nitrogen fertilizer can be done in the succeeding crop. | |
