Abstract:
Mungbean [Vigna radiate (L.) Wilczek] is an important pulse crop of south and south East Asia, grown in diverse agro-climatic zones and is major source of protein.
In India the crop is grown in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
The most important diseases are mungbean yellow mosaic virus, cercospora leaf spots and bacterial leaf spots, which directly affect growth and production of mungbean.
It is seen that high degree of resistance is not available in germplasm lines.
There is inconsistency for disease reaction score perhaps due to the natural incidence which is highly affected by the weather variables during the crop season.
There is dire need to identify lines with long term desirable resistance to these diseases.
Elite material generated from last 10 years was evaluated for their performance against these prevalent diseases from 2002 –2006 using infector-cum-indicator rows to create epidemic for these diseases. Seventeen genotypes consecutively scored less than 3.0 to 3.5 during all the years of testing for all these diseases and can be considered good sources of multiple disease resistance for cultivation or for use in breeding program.
