Abstract:
Twenty seven snapmelon landraces originated from two agro-ecological regions of India (primary center of diversity) were analyzed using morphological characters of vine and fruit, disease and pest resistance, ascorbic acid and titrable acidity and DNA markers. Snapmelon landraces resistant to downy mildew, Cucumber Mosaic Virus and root knot nematode were identified. RAPD based cluster analysis showed rich genetic variation among snapmelon landraces. SSR analysis of these landraces and that of reference accessions of melon originating from Spain, Israel, Korea, Japan, Maldives, Iraq, Pakistan indicated that the germplasm of Indian snapmelon possessed a high level of unique genetic diversity which could be exploited to widen the genetic base of melon germplasm available globally.
