Abstract:
The territory of Central Asia and the Caucasus region are the primary and secondary centers origin for many vegetable crops with large diversity of indigenous species. Indigenous vegetables (IVs) are adapted to local climatic conditions and important for nutrition of the increasing population. After the collapse of USSR the socio-economic conditions in most CAC countries is poor. There is some information on conservation of indigenous vegetables (in situ and ex situ), documentation, breeding, seed production and use of indigenous vegetables. However, many indigenous vegetables are not used adequately. The strategy in Central Asia and the Caucasus region is conservation of IVs, research and rational use for food security and development of agriculture. The following objectives help to achieve this goal: conservation of IVs and their relatives in situ and ex situ, supporting establishing gene banks, exchange and access to germplasm and collaboration among national programs. Efforts on strengthening of national programs and increasing of fundamental and applied researches on priority IVs are necessary. Priority directions for variety improvement are breeding for high yield, with early maturity, heat and drought tolerance, disease and pest resistance, quality, long shelf life, and suitability for processing. Insufficient seed production system reduces wide use of IVs. Collaboration can be realized through networks, working groups and coordination at national, regional and international levels.
