Abstract:
Mungbean is an important grain legume for South and South East Asia.
It is grown in various agroecological conditions and cropping systems with diverse cultural practices.
No single plant type could be appropriate for all the production systems.
Released Indian cultivars (74) were grouped for agromorphological descriptors.
The anthocyanin colour was present in most varieties.
The stem colour was generally green or greenish with purple splashes except in PKVM 8802, which depicted purple colour.
Wide diversity (38 to 142 cm) was observed in plant height.
The early maturing varieties were short (38-50 cm). All mungbean varieties were green in seed colour except Sona which was yellow in colour.
Maximum varieties were of medium seed size (3-5 g/100 seed wt.) except Pusa Vishal and Pusa Ratna (large seeded, >5 g/100 seed). Such characterization of released cultivars would provide valuable information for further breeding work.
