GENOTYPE X ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS IN SEED SIZE AND SEEDLING VIGOUR IN MUNGBEAN (VIGNA RADIATE (L.) WILIZECK)

Authors:   S.K. Rao, S. Rao
Keywords:   Mungbean, seed size, seedling vigour, g x e interaction
Abstract:
The mungbean seed production programmes are affected due to variation in the distribution of rainfall and temperatures in different agroclimatic zones of Madhya Pradesh, India. This limits the availability of quality seed to the farmers. Hence an attempt was been made to study the seedling vigor and its g x e interactions with eight mungbean genotypes grown in two seasons and four locations. The seeds harvested from these genotypes were evaluated for the seed size, germination (%), seedling length, seedling dry weight and vigour index (dry weight basis). Genotypes x year interactions were significant for germination, seedling length, seedling dry weight and vigour index by length. Differences among the varieties were significant for seed size and seedling dry weight. Location x variety interaction was also significant for seed size and seedling dry weight. The variation in the expression of seed size as well as seedling vigour parameters were mainly attributed due to variation in rainfall distribution as well as a climatic conditions that prevailed during the pod development. Implications of these findings have been related to quality seed production of improved varieties.
