Abstract:
Indonesian Government’s strategy is to promote economic opportunities, empowering the poor, and enhancing social security to alleviate poverty and also better health and nutrition particularly for low-income households, especially in pregnant and lactating women and children.
Indigenous Vegetables (IV’s) have been known and utilized traditionally as vegetables, spices, ornamental and traditional medicine.
However, a progressive development in agriculture and economy has pushed IV’s as minor vegetables. Efforts had been initiated to promote utilization of IV’s for improving nutrition of poor household in Indonesia.
Promotion programs were conducted to increase awareness of IV’s through participation in various events such as food bazaars and exhibition, field day and participatory evaluation, demonstration plots, women’s training programs, distribution of seed and flyers, techno-guides on selected IV’s, seminars and poster presentation.
Networking with Indonesian Institute for Assessment of Agriculture Technology, local Government and related Institutions will be arranged to follow up promotion and dissemination in order to reach the target of low-income families in different provinces in Indonesia.
