| Abstract:
Morphogenesis and the anatomical features of flower bud were studied in three loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) cultivars: ‘Danbianzhong’ and ‘Luoyangchun’ cultivated in Hangzhou and ‘Zaozhong 6’ plantedin Guangzhou. Terminal buds were collected at intervals of 7 to 10 days from June, 2003 to May, 2004. Bud sections were observed under a microscope. The results showed that changes in bud anatomic structure of the three cultivars were similar. Before flower differentiation, the tunica and corpus cells were in disorderly arrangement. When the flower bud started to differentiate, active mitoses were first observed in these cells. Then the cell division in the central mother-cell zone accelerated, which obscured the distinction between the central and the peripheral meristem zone, and a darker-colored meristematic mantle zone with smaller cells were formed, which could be regarded as an early histological (cytological) sign of the transition from vegetative to floral bud. It was postulated that flower bud initiation of loquat in Guangzhou started from late July to early August, about 3 months before anthesis. | |
