ISHS Acta Horticulturae 750: II International Symposium on Loquat

OCCURRENCE OF NATURAL TRIPLOIDS IN LOQUAT

Authors:   Q.G. Guo, X.L. Li, W.W. Xing, Q. He, G.L. Liang
Keywords:   Eriobotrya japonica, breeding
Abstract:
Chromosome numbers were counted from root tips of 45,138 seeds of 21 cultivars of loquat derived from open pollination from 1997 to 2005 using the wall degradation and hypotonic treatment method which proved to be a simple and effective technique. A total of 311 natural polyploids were observed (0.68%). The distribution of polyploid types were 225 (72.35%) triploids, 50 (16.08%) tetraploids, 10 (3.22%) pentaploids and 26 (8.36%) mixoploids. There were significant differences in polyploidy frequency in the cultivars varying from 2.32% to less than 1%. The chromosome number of most polyploids was stable. Growth of polyploids was weaker than diploids.
