POMOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF LOQUAT SELECTIONS OF THE BLACK SEA REGION OF TURKEY |

| Abstract:
The loquat crop in Turkey has increased in the last 25–30 years. The crop relies on standard cultivars grown in the Mediterranean region. Turkey have 286,000 trees, with production of about 12,000 tons. This production suits fresh consumption in the Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean regions. Additionaly, Mediterranean regions can produce early cutivars. Black Sea region is the most valuable production area for fresh consumption. This study was conducted to select promising loquat types genotypes from the Black Sea region in Turkey. Seventy-eight loquat trees were evaluated. Traits measured included fruit length, fruit width, number of fruits per cluster, average seed numbers per fruit, seed weight, flesh/seed rates, fruit length/width rates, total soluble solids % (TSS) and pH. Mean values for one year ranged as follows: fruit weight (11.39 to 66.09 g), fruit length (30.39 to 48.02 mm), fruit width (26.80 to 49.92 mm), fruit cluster weight (69.75 to 404.9 g), fruit number per cluster (5 to 21), seed number (1.75 to 5.4), seed weight (2.49 to 11.02), flesh/seed rates (2.16 to 7.72), fruit length/width rates (0.78 to 1.1), total soluble solids (TSS) (9.5 to 18.5%) and pH (3.23 to 5.32). | |
