INDUCED MUTATIONS IN ANNURCA APPLE VARIETY

Authors:   C. Fideghelli, F. Monastra, G. Della Strada, R. Quarta, B. Donini
Abstract:
Annurca is an apple variety grown in the south of Italy and demanded in the local markets for its high quality. From the agronomical point of view it has several shortcomings such as bare wood, tremendous vigour, late bearing habit, biennial crop, very short peduncle, lack of red skin colour.

An irradiation program was established in 1971 to induce mutations of the growth habit, of the bearing habit and of the fruit characteristics. 1630 grafsticks have been irradiated at 5 and 6 KR (60 Co). 228 deviant types are under evaluation for the following characters: no bare wood, wide crotch angle, spur type, heavy cropping, fruit red skin colour, fruit size, long peduncle, early ripening.
