SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SEVERAL QUINCE ROOTSTOCKS TO LATENT VIRUSES

Abstract:
Statistical analysis of several comparative trials including different quince rootstocks, pear varieties and places in France, shows clearly large differences in the homogeneity of trees belonging to the same clonal rootstock or to the same association rootstock-variety. These trials include Angers and Provence Quinces. Some of them were healthy, others were virus infected.

An experiment was carried on to estimate differences among clones of quince for susceptibility to viruses.

- Six healthy clones were infected by three viruses and their common associations: Vein Yellows, Mosaic and Rubbery wood. Growth was recorded on rootstock budded on itself ("homo-budding") and on budded varieties (Passe-Crassane or Williams). In these experimental conditions, the clone C16-L-2 (SYDO) was less susceptible than two other Angers clones (Quince A and C21-L-4) and the clone BA29 was less susceptible than two other Provence clones (C98-4 and C85-1).

The importance of this susceptibility to viruses of rootstocks is discussed.
