ISHS Acta Horticulturae 75: Symposium on Clonal Variation in Apple and Pear

METHODS AND RESULTS OF CLONAL SELECTION IN VITICULTURE

Author:   P. Dr. H. Becker
Abstract:
In Germany the production of grafted vines depends on certified clones. Distribution of clones is based on homologation by means of national and European legislations. Scions and rootstocks of most of the cultivars in Germany are selected clones. Varieties of vines are chimeras. Single vines or buds are propagated and separatly planted as clones. Characteristics of the clones including the organoleptic character of the wine and virus infections are investigated. Three propagation steps (three generations, 12 – 15 years) are required to find the best clones.

The economic results of clonal-selection in viticulture is obvious : both quality and yield per hectare are greatly improved.
