ISHS Acta Horticulturae 75: Symposium on Clonal Variation in Apple and Pear

SIGNIFICANCE OF VARIOUS PARAMETERS FOR CLONAL SELECTION OF APPLES

Author:   W. Müller
Abstract:
The first step in the selection work is the identification of the new variety. Additional information is needed for an evaluation of a future production. Details are given of the main measurable characteristics, as trunk circumference, extension of the tree canopy, weight of tree parts, length of terminal shoots and yield, which may be of importance for an assessment of the performance. A list of the most important nonmeasurable characteristics is added. An optimal combination of measurable and nonmeasurable characteristics is needed for an effective selection work. The aim has to be the detection of the real performance of a variety as early as possible.
