ISHS Acta Horticulturae 748: II International Symposium on Acclimatization and Establishment of Micropropagated Plants

STUDIES ON ACCLIMATIZATION, ESTABLISHMENT AND TUBERIZATION OF ZANTEDESCHIA (CALLALILLY) MICROPROPAGULES

Author:   J. Prakash
Keywords:   sucrose concentration, light pre-treatment, tuber production
Abstract:
The propagation of Zantedeschia varieties by tissue culture has been achieved successfully by academic institutions and commercial laboratories in Asia-Pacific and Europe. However, only 20 percent of the plants produced through tissue culture result into successful acclimatization and tuberization of flowering size bulbs; and thus, there is a constant shortage of Zantedeschia flowering size bulbs in the industry and there is a need to improve the performance and utilization of tissue culture plants of this crop. With this in view, large scale studies on acclimatization, establishment, life cycle and tuberization of Zantedeschia varieties, viz., Black Magic, Chianti, Florex Gold, Hot Shot, Majestic Red, Mango, Neroli, Pacific Pink, Pink Persuasion, Pot of Gold, Sunrise and Treasure, were conducted. It was found that the increase in concentration of sucrose in the rooting media improved the biomass of the micropropagated plants, but had resulted into greater transpiration, wilting and poor establishment. The pre-treatment of in vitro rooted plants by full-spectrum HID light, obtain by blending blue spectrum (metal halide) with the red spectrum (high pressure sodium), resulted in improved acclimatization of plants and production of higher percentage of flowering-size tubers for commercial floriculture.
