Abstract:
The goal of this work was to determine the effect of different fertilization methods (fertigation and slow release fertilizers) on biomass production, N, P and K tissue concentration, N, P and K uptake and leaching losses.
The experiment was conducted with Lavandula lanata and Nepeta amethystina, grown in a polyethylene greenhouse in containers filled with a perlite, blond peat and coir mixture (3:1:1 v/v/v). The studies finished after flowering (111 and 69 days after transplanting Lavander and Nepeta, respectively). The treatments were: O1- 5 g L-1 and O2- 7 g L-1 of Osmocote plus 16:8:12 (8- to 9- month release at 20ºC) mixed at pre-planting with the substrate, and two fertigation solutions, F1- 3 mM N, 0.4 mM P and 2.5 mM K; and F2- 5 mM N, 0.7 mM P and 4 mM K. The fertilization method had a significant effect on the bioproductive parameters with the slow release fertilizers treatment showing highest values of dry matter production in both species.
With regard to treatments rates, there was a variation of dry matter production and nutrients concentration depending on the species and fertilizers used.
At the end of the experiment the O1 treatment in Lavender showed very low N, P and K leaching and thus a more efficient nutrient uptake.
The O2 treatment in Nepeta produced lower NK losses and was the most effective in stimulating growth.
