Abstract:
Simplified subirrigated system including strophor containers and a smart valve controlling the entry of water to the reservoir (modified Auto-pot® system) was tested in tomato production during the years of 2004 and 2005 in order to determine the effects of different substrates and container volumes on yield, quality and water consumption. In the spring season of 2004, perlite, zeolite and volcanic tuff were compared in the system. The highest total yield was obtained from perlite as 11.3 kg/m2. The following autumn (2004) and spring (2005) seasons the volume of the containers as 6, 9, 12 and 15 litres perlite per plant was compared in terms of yield, fruit quality and water use efficiency. There were no significant differences among the treatments in both growing seasons and the total yields in autumn and spring seasons changed between 8.48 – 11.24 and 9.74 – 10.18 kg/m2 respectively.
