ISHS Acta Horticulturae 747: VIII International Symposium on Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates: Advances in Soil and Soilless Cultivation under Protected Environment

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS TO INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN BENEFICIAL INSECTS

Authors:   F.L. Rubio, G. Sterk, B. Schelfhout
Keywords:   bumblebees, biological pest control
Abstract:
The most developed markets for bumblebees and biological pest control organisms are mainly located in countries in the northern hemisphere, characterised by well developed greenhouse technology (ICM) to meet the high food safety and quality standards set forth by these countries. While trying to develop new markets for bumblebees and beneficials, various difficulties may be encountered. These difficulties are mainly related to cultural barriers, technical and financial limitations, competition, local legislation and regulations, logistic and distribution incompetence. Because each country has its own idiosyncrasies, they need to be approached according to the local norms, standards and legislation. In many cases, it is necessary to negotiate with the local authorities in order to apply for modifications and adaptations.
