Abstract:
Supermarkets require tomato fruits to be within specific size grades.
Reducing the number of fruit per truss has been used to increase fruit size in winter, and vice versa in summer.
Early studies have demonstrated that fruit size falls rapidly down the truss for large fruited varieties (e.g., beefsteak) , but that there is only a minimal effect for the small fruited cherry tomatoes.
This current study examines the effect of modifying fruit numbers per truss on the fruit size distribution on four (4) standard sized tomato varieties.
