Abstract:
In a world that produces enough food for every one, about 800 million people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition (Anonymous, 2002). The recent report indicates that noncommunicable diseases especially cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus currently kill more people every year than any other cause of death and that 2.7 million lives could potentially be saved each year if fruit and vegetable consumption was sufficiently increased (Anonymous, 2004).
The present paper highlights the activities of production of fruits and vegetables and its consumption coupled with its accessibility, which establishes strong linkage between fruit and vegetables on the one side, and human health on the other side without which the proposed horticultural and health programmes in the interest of human health could not be achieved.
