Abstract:
Melon (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus Naud. cv.
Chunli) plants were subjected to 4, 8, 12 and 16 meq L-1 nitrogen treatments with substrate culture (1 peat: 1 vermiculite: 1 perlite) in greenhouse.
Nitrogen was supplied with nutrient solution (P: 3, K: 6, Ca: 8, Mg: 4 meq L-1 with microelements). Melon fruits were analyzed 25 and 55 days after anthesis (DAA). Fruit N concentration increased significantly with increasing nitrogen concentration, the highest fruit N concentration was in 16 meq L-1 treatment, and fruit N concentration of 55 DAA was significantly higher than that of 25 DAA. Fruit P concentration decreased as nitrogen concentration increased, whereas fruit K concentration of 25 DAA was not significantly affected by nitrogen treatments.
Fruit Ca concentration increased whereas fruit Mg concentration decreased with increasing nitrogen concentration.
Fruit nitrate content and TSS content increased significantly with increasing concentration of N in the nutrient solution, whereas fruit titratable acidity decreased significantly.
The highest vitamin C concentration, soluble sugar and sugar/acid ratio were achieved by 8 meq L-1 nitrogen treatment.
