A NO-ELECTRICITY HYDROPONIC CULTURE SYSTEM FOR FRUIT VEGETABLES

Abstract:
We designed a hydroponic culture system for fruit vegetables that uses no electrical power. The system uses pots placed in beds. The pots contain 10 mm pumices wrapped in a permeable sheet that plant roots do not penetrate. Plants are cultured in 2 stages. First they are grown with nutrient solution in the pot only. Then, when their roots reach the bottom of the pot, a stopper in the bottom of the pot is removed to allow nutrient solution in the bed to flow into the pot. The bed is connected to a tank with a floating bulb that controls the depth of nutrient solution in the bed. In the test experiment, we successfully grew cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, kidney beans and watermelons. This system will allow hydroponic culture in places without electrical power.
