Abstract:
A small scale field trial was conducted to assess the performance of transgenic papaya line KN116/5 R2 for PRSV resistance and their agronomic qualities. The experiment was carried out from June 2003 to July 2004 at the field testing facility of the Plant Genetic Engineering Unit, BIOTEC, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Nakhon Pathom. The results showed that hermaphrodite transgenic papaya line KN116/5 R2 was highly resistant (97%) to PRSV infection. The non-transgenic plants showed 100% PRSV-infection after two months of planting. Transgenic papayas displayed a normal growth rate. Yields obtained from this resistant line KN116/5 R2 was approximately forty times higher than that of the non-transgenic control. The average fruit weight of this transgenic line ranged from 1.7-2.4 kg fruit with the average total soluble solids of 12%. Fruit obtained from non-transgenic papayas were small and distorted with ringspot symptoms on the fruit surface. Transgenic lines are now being tested for biosafety assessment and breeding for homozygosity to the PRSV resistant trait.
