ISHS Acta Horticulturae 74: Symposium on Plum Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDATION AND CYTOLOGY IN PLUM-TREES - PRESENT TRENDS

Author:   G. Salesses
Abstract:
Studies developped in garden plum-trees have anable us to state more precisely the genetic structure of the group and the theoretic possibilities of genetic transfers. Nevertheless, they did not allow to draw a valuable conclusion upon the origin of cultivated hexaploid forms. A second hypothesis was propounded and confronted with the Crane and Lawrence one's, but now it seems necessary to double some hybrids or species to go on with efficacious cytogenetics analysis. Anthers-culture to obtain some haploid forms and also identification of mitotic chromosomes seem two desirable trends.

As concerns varieties studies have been developped mainly with a methodological view, while rootstocks creation, thanks to cytological basis, may rapidly give concrete results.
